A lot of Qlik Sense customers I interact with have heard of NPrinting, yet never had the opportunity to see it in action so I thought it would be great to put together a blog on what NPrinting is, and how it can help!
What is NPrinting?
NPrinting is an add-on which can be used for both Qlik Sense and QlikView. It’s actually part of an ever growing group of offerings Qlik have beyond the core modules, it does seem like there are new acquisitions being integrated into the technology stack on an almost monthly basis.
How Qlik Sense is different to the traditional BI platforms
First off, Qlik Sense isn’t really a reporting or dashboarding platform, it’s an analytics platform driven by their proprietary associative engine. This is where things get a little murky. Most IT departments are familiar with the traditional platforms like Power BI and SAP Business Objects which are geared towards reports and dashboards. These platforms have chap down in IT who cooks up a report and if you’re really lucky you don’t need to log in anywhere or really think too much, it can just appear in an inbox. Hey presto, instant stats for next months board report!
Natively, Qlik doesn’t have this type of delivery functionality, I mean why would it when Apps are built to enable self guided discovery? Well, clearly there is always going to be someone sitting on C level who doesn’t have the time or inclination to drill around Apps and find some nuggets. The person that just needs something delivered! Enter NPrinting!
How NPrinting helps
NPrinting enables the delivery of content, what’s quite cool is it has a variety of mediums available including email, FTP, and something Qlik call News Stand. When creating a task with NPrinting a connection is made to the Qlik Sense App, and the chart or element which you wish to distribute is selected and imbedded in the output. A task can be scheduled to run on whatever duration is required, so this manages your typical daily/weekly/monthly scenarios. You can do dynamic bursting, so leveraging AD groups to deliver content. And you can trigger reports to fire based on certain criteria!
It doesn’t provide the same degree of guided analytics, but it’s not like all the other big reporting platforms do anyway!
What is News Stand?
So what’s the News Stand? Well the New Stand is essentially a portal where scheduled “reports” can be delivered and subsequently consumed from. This is great for those traditional types of reports where they need to be up to date every day, and referenced on an ad-hoc basis, without cluttering your inbox!
What makes NPrinting cool
What’s really cool about NPrinting is that it operates differently from Qlik Sense in a licencing respect. Because it’s a static distribution engine you don’t need to licence every user like you do in Qlik Sense with tokens. Although you don’t get to leverage the Associative Engine, getting insight to the masses is always better than nothing!
